What Does Proverbs 18:22 Mean?
‘He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.’ NIV
The message of this verse seems unequivocal: it states that marriage is a good thing
and has God’s blessing. It doesn’t say that you must marry. It doesn’t say that celibacy is wrong. O.K. but I do
have a problem with this verse. The Book of Proverbs is mostly attributed to King Solomon, some parts may have been
written by others but scholars seem to agree that chapter 18 can reliably be attributed to
Solomon. In The Book of Kings, chapter 11 verse 3 we learn that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. You see my problem. How do we reconcile the divinely inspired wisdom of Solomon with this information?
