There Is Power In The Name Of Jesus!
"Jesus
Something special
Supernatural
About Your name
Jesus
Something happens
When I mention Your name..."
These lyrics by Kurt Carr give expression to a truth that we’ve all experienced at some point in our lives 🙏🏻.
Over the centuries; millions of songs have been written that glorify this Name, incurable diseases have been healed, needs have been met, impossible situations resolved, the oppressed have been set free, and whole countries have been transformed; all in the power of the name of Jesus Christ.
1) What Does the Name ‘Jesus’ Mean?
The English name Jesus is derived from the Latin Iesus, a transliteration of the Greek Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs).
A. Jesus name in Greek
🇬🇷 The Greek form is a rendering of the Hebrew ישוע (Yeshua), a variant of the earlier name יהושע (Yehoshua), or in English, "Joshua", meaning "Yah saves".
B. Jesus mean ’Savior’
At the time He was born, the name Jesus was a pretty common name in Judea. Historians say that parents gave their boys this name, which means ‘savior’ 👼 in the hope that he would be the one to deliver Israel from the heavy oppression of the Romans.

So why did the Almighty God choose to give the promised Savior a name that was so common?
It could be the same reason Jesus was born in a humble manger; divinity was going to become one with humanity.
Prophet Isaiah’s words proved this point hundreds of years before the Immaculate Conception.
'Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!
But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word.
🐑 He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.'
"Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth."
Isaiah 53:4-7
2) What Power Is In The Name of Jesus?
If the name Jesus was a common given name at the time, why is it so powerful? 🤔
I believe the answer lies in the Person bearing the name. Mathew’s gospel gives us insight into the Person behind the name.
'And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’"
Matthew 1:21-23
Jesus was not just another boy who was named ‘the Lord saves’ by hopeful parents.
He is the fulfillment of centuries of prophecy and the realization of the hope of all the ages. He is the anointed One, the Messiah.
How do we know this?
Well it’s there in scripture, plain as day.
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
Isaiah 7:14
This is the prophecy that was referenced in Mathew 1. Isaiah was one of the Messianic prophets 😇.
The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
John 4:25-26
This is perhaps one of the most dramatic moments in Bible history. The unassuming Jesus Christ made a claim that no one else, no matter how notorious, had ever made 😲.
The Samaritan woman believed Him, because she knew He was telling the truth.
A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.”
Luke 9:35
This was God the Father affirming that Jesus Christ was who He said He was.
"In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."
John 16:23-24
This is the primary reason believers pray in the name of Jesus and receive answers.
3) How to Receive the Power of Jesus?
It’s very simple, believe that He who He says He is, and invite Him to be Lord of your life🤲🏻.
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
Acts 16:31
4) The Power of the Name of Jesus in Scripture
📜 Below are a few more scripture verses that talk about the power in the name of Jesus:
"Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Philippians 2:9-11
"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."
John 1:3
"And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."
Colossians 2:15
